Whichever night of whichever month, to the
cover of the grove that precedes the old Hospital of the Five
Wounds, (today Parliament of Andalusia), or in the arches of the
bridges that crosses the Guadalquivir River near the Expo, the
beautiful strains that deck the shades out sound and they delight
the onlookers that over there wander.
It is the celestial music of the numerous bands of bugles and drums
tuning their instruments like prelude to the great recital that they
will offer in the Holy Week of Seville, soundtrack that will
accompany Christ from the same moment of his Entrance in Jerusalem,
until his Resurrection.
With
these pages, I will try to give our Particular view of something that is
present in the atmosphere of Seville, a sample of Jesus' Passion that
confronts all splendour in the Holy Week, but that the city lives during the
whole year, in each neighbourhood, in each meeting, in each particular
home... in the soul of all the sevillians.
Customs during Easter Week.
The locals usually get dressed up to go out to see the Fraternities,
especially on Palm Sunday, Holy Thursday and the evening of Good Friday. The
favourite sweet food at Easter is "Torrijas", bread soaked in wine and
honey.
On Holy Thursday most churches install the "Monumento" to Jesus Christ. In
doing so, the Eucharist is worshipped precisely on the day which
commemorates the Last Supper. The Monumento installed in the Cathedral is
particularly spectacular.
